Gary K. Shilts died Sunday, August 18th, 2019 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  He was born March 24th, 1936, in Junction City, Kansas, to John and Maye Belle Shilts.

Gary came to the area as a member of the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Kincheloe Air Force Base.  There he met Marjean McCready.  The two were married in October 1957, and in 1968 they moved to a farm in Bruce Township where they raised a family that included Gary Jr, Annette, Thomas, Kevin, Robert, Katrina, and adopted daughter Becky.  Gary and Marjean were together until her death in December 2014.

For much of his working life, Gary was involved in the floral and plant business and is perhaps best known as the owner of Co-ed Flowers and Country Road Greenhouse.  During the 80s and 90s he was an active member of the downtown business community, and one of his greatest pleasures was having weekday coffee with his buddies at the American Café or Woolworth’s lunch counter.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Gary Shilts and Karen Waalen of the Sault; Annette Shilts of the Sault; Tom and Carla Shilts of Lansing; Kevin and Clara Shilts of Bonduel, WI; Bob and Hazel Shilts of Wausaukee, WI; and Katrina Shilts of Elmira, NY.  Also surviving are six grandchildren; Richard, Robert, Lucinda, Bridget, Katie, and Sam; and one great-grandchild, Rory, son of Richard Shilts and Amanda Duncan.

The family would like to acknowledge the outstanding medical and nursing care Gary received during his final years.  Dr. Thilak Chander and his staff were responsive and supportive in every situation.  The nurses, CNAs, and other members of the team at Sault Medilodge went far above ordinary expectations of care and made the end of Gary’s life as pleasant as possible.

A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s ProCathedral Church on Friday, August 23rd, at 1:00 pm with Father Sebastian Kavumkal as Celebrant, followed by a gathering in the Mary Room at St. Mary’s ProCathedral Church.  Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery.  Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at www.clarkbaileynewhouse.com.
