Maria Stella Berlinger Maki, 92, of Sault Ste. Marie, MI passed away on Friday evening October 28, 2016 at War Memorial Hospital with members of her family at her side.

Maria Stella was born November 24, 1923 in a hilly southern Italian village in the province of Reggio Calabria, Italy.  She arrived in the US just shy of her second birthday with her mother, Mariangela, and elder brother, Joe, to join her father, Luigi Berlinger, who had previously relocated from Italy to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

As a young girl living in the Soo, Maria Stella helped her family during the Great Depression by selling fresh vegetables and flowers from her father's famous "Luigi's Garden”; she later spent several years working at the JC Penny store.  She met her future husband, who was home on leave from the War, at the Pullar Stadium, and she and Carl Maki married on April 4, 1946.  Together they raised three children on Ryan Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie.

Maria Stella is predeceased by her husband, of 62 years, Carl, her parents and brothers, Joe “Pep” and Jack “Jug” Berlinger and her sister, Ann Guiliani.  She is survived by her brother, Dominic Berlinger, of the Soo, her son, Tom of Chicago, daughters Linda (James) Reed of Wisconsin and Pat (Bill) Rothwell of Texas, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Maria Stella was a dedicated member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  A memorial service in her honor will be held 11:00am Wednesday November 2, 2016 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home with Brother John Hascall officiating.  Her final resting place will be in Riverside Cemetery next to her husband, Carl.

The family is very appreciative for the care she received at both Freighter View Assisted Living and Long Term Care at War Memorial Hospital.  They are especially thankful to their dear friend, Joan White Peterson, who showed special dedication during the last weeks of Maria’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church.  Online Condolences may be left at www.clarkbaileynewhouse.com.

Tom, Linda, Pat - We get our Evening News a day late so just received it yesterday. So sorry to hear of your mom's passing. We are in the Soo often for Laker hockey games and think of her every time we go down Ryan Street. Prayers and hugs to you and your families.
