Theresa (Strong) Mattson, 56, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015.

Theresa was born February 11, 1959, in St. Ignace, to John and Alene (Lutat) Strong of Rudyard.

Theresa attended Rudyard High School and played on the varsity basketball team.  After high school, Theresa fell in love with and married Harold (Anti) Mattson.  Theresa managed the Kinross Golf course for several years, and then moved to California with her husband, who worked for the United States Government as an Inspector.

Theresa moved back to Michigan and joined the United States Navy in 1985.  Theresa served our country proudly for 13 years, and was deployed to Iraq during the Gulf War (Desert Storm).  Theresa was an Aviation Specialist and Naval Explosive Expert.  Theresa spent the majority of her years in the Navy in Florida; she was also stationed in Greece and Maine. While in the Navy, she was able to experience many countries, and visited the Great Wall of China.  Theresa’s husband, Harold, died in 1988 while Theresa was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida.

Theresa was stationed in Pensacola, Florida for several of her years in the Navy, and liked Pensacola; she decided to settle there when she left the Navy.  Theresa then opened a business, Al-T’s Auto Salvage, with a friend from the Navy.

Theresa was a very loving and caring person and tried to help anyone and everyone in need; she supported several charities.  Theresa never had any children, but had a little boxer named Buddy that she loved very much.

Theresa is survived by her mother, Alene Strong, (father John Strong died in 1999), sisters, Mary Turner and Sandra Strong (sister Sharon Olmsted died in 1989), brothers John (Butch) (Donna) Strong, Timothy Strong, Barry Strong, and Bart Strong, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Theresa’s life will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, at Clark-Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie.  Online condolences may be left at www.clarkbaileynewhouse.com.

So sorry to hear this news. Theresa was my girlhood friend and we spent many happy hours together riding our bikes up and down the road. She was a beautiful girl who never had a vain moment. Theresa loved to compete and win and I appreciated her courage and spunk. My prayers will be for God to give comfort to her loved ones during these difficult days.

I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I would have known more about where Theresa was living and what enjoyment she was finding in life.
Wish we could have had the opportunity to visit again as we did as when we were kids.
I remember the times when my mom and dad would stop and visit his cousin, John Strong, and his family. The hours spent on the tandem swinging chairs while the adults visited.
I am sorry I am unable to make it to the funeral service.
I will keep Theresa and all the family in our prayers.
God Bless.
Love to All.
