Hubert R. Rogers (Ruggiero)
Hubert R. Rogers, age 87, born and raised in Sault Sainte Marie, passed peacefully into eternity on
April J 8,2014 surrounded by family at home. Hubert was born August 29, 1926 and was the 121hand
last surviving child of Eugene and Josephine (Moffa) Rogers, who had emigrated from Italy.
He attended St. Mary's grade school and Sault High School, graduating in 1946. IIe thoroughly enjoyed
football and was named all-conference fullback. For a time he also played semi-pro ball with the Sault
Rockets where "The pay was non-existent but we had fun." Hubert married Dorothy Roy, his blue-eyed
sweetie, on November 15lh
, 1947. This obviously was an extremely important event in his life as he
would need good reason to forsake the first day of deer season. Hubert served honorably in Korea with
the U.S. Army 51st Artillery Battalion.
Hubert worked as a civilian for the U.S. Coast Guard for forty one years as a Marine Construction
Specialist. Much of the first twenty five of those years was spent underwater as a hard-hat construction
diver on projects throughout the Great Lakes -If he wasn't building a structure he wac;blowing one up.
Years of construction diving took a terrific toll on his body so in later years he specialized in inspecting
the work of marine construction contractors performing work for the government. Barges, cranes, steel
and underwater concrete comprised his career. His projects in all of the Great Lakes and the East Coast
will long outlive him as they stand resolutely against ice and wave action. Hubert's photo and some of
his diving gear are on display at the Whitefish Point Museum.
lie will be remembered with a smile for the pride in his Italian heritage, accordion playing and Italian
songs at every holiday, hand delivered Panettone, his garden, cigar smoke and rare steak, as the deer
"Camp Ross". pizzas from scratch including spinning dough above his head, friends around the table
from every walk of life, loud gatherings in the back porch, five card stud poker, hot peppers in the Fall,
"just a dram" of brandy, tramping the woods for the perfect Christmas tree, a large box of Hershey bars,
calamari at Christmas, an extraordinary work ethic, living life with gusto and the wisest of counsel.
Hubert will be sorely missed by Dorothy (Roy), his wife of 67 years; son Randy (Bonnie) or Brimley
MI; daughters Carol (Gary) Collins of Madison WI, Toni (Brad Crabb) Attcridg of the Sault, Cindy
(Tim) Huston of River Falls WI and Evelyn (Mike) Caplan of Charleston sc. Grandpa will be tenderly
remembered by grandchildren Michael, Kevin and John Atteridg; Zachary (Wenjing) Fredman,
Rebecca (Mardechai) Bronner, Benjamin and Rachael Fredman; Kristin (Darin) Rubenzer, Chelsea and
Randall Rogers and great grandchildren Isaac, Delaney and Noah. Hubert will be fondly remembered
by sisters-in-law Ivy Piche (AI deceased) and Evelyn (James) Herd, along with many special nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Allie, Joseph. Eugene, Ernest and Arthur
and sisters Margaret, Ethel, Carmel, Donelda, Loretta and Geraldine.
Visitation will be at St. Mary's Church in Sault Sainte Marie MI starting at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday April
22,2014. A 12:00 Funeral Mass will follow. Warm thanks to Dr. Robert Mackie and Ellie, Chippewa
County Health Department, EIJP Hospice and Sault Community Action. Rather than flowers please
consider donations to S1. Mary's School in the Sault or the Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum.
