Mary Catherine McNaughton, age 82, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2010 at War Memorial Hospital with her devoted and loving husband and children by her side. Mary was born on August 26, 1928 in Sault Ste. Marie to Peter and Lena (Leahy) Giacoletto. She graduated from Lorretto Catholic High School in 1946 with awards for her scholastic achievement. In 1948 she was married to Otto McNaughton in St. Mary''s Church. Friends and strangers alike saw Mary as a kind individual who possessed a rare quality of care and courtesy. She lived life to its fullest and had a contagious enthusiasm for learning, and in all areas of her life was a generous and patient teacher. She was an avid reader and shared her love of books with children and adults, especially as a reading paraprofessional for the Sault Public Schools. Mary had a strong appreciation of music. She played the piano her whole life and accompanied her husband to many vocal and orchestral productions. She favored sporting activities which she performed with much grace, such as skating, dancing, and cross-country skiing. Her thrill for discovery matched that of her husband as together they embarked on many adventures, which involved travel, sailing, canoeing, and snowshoeing. Mary is survived by her husband, Otto Biddle McNaughton, Jr., her nine children: Patricia (George) Maas, Mary Catherine Leahy McNaughton (David Beauchesne), Kevin McNaughton, Nancy (Kent) McPherson, Sheila McNaughton, Barbara (Mitch) Dalman, Otto (Beth) McNaughton, III, Amy McNaughton, Andrea (Mark) Williamson, sixteen grand children, five great-grand children, thirteen nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth (Michael) Nemchek. The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff of War Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care and support. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph''s Church Wednesday, December 29th at 11:00 am. The officiate will be Father Norbert Landerville, a longtime family friend. Friends may meet the family at a luncheon following mass in the church hall. Contributions in her name can be made to the War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The following organizations were also important to Mary: The Carmelite Sisters of Concord, 215 Pleasant St., Concord, NH 03301; Institute of Blessed Virgin Mary Provincial House, Loretto Convent, P.O. Box 508, Wheaton, IL 60189. Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
